"Killa" is a Quechua word for the "Moon Goddess" or "Mother Moon" in Inca mythology and religion. She was the sister and wife of "Inti" (The Sun God), daughter of Viracocha, and mother of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, mythical founders of the Quechua empire and culture. She is the goddess of marriage, of everything related to the feminine, and to women. It has some similarity with other ancient deities such as Aphrodite (Greek Goddess of beauty, sensuality and love) or Venus (Roman Goddess of love and the feminine), and on the other hand with the Virgin Mary of Catholics. This goddess, represented by the Moon, accompanied Inti in equal rank in the heavenly court. Mother of the firmament, marks the times of the harvests, assumed the protection of the entire feminine universe. Myths surrounding Mama Killa include that she cried silver tears and that lunar eclipses were caused when she was attacked by an animal. It was conceived in the form of a beautiful woman and its temples were tended by dedicated priestesses. To the goddess Mama Killa was attached the religious fervor of women, who formed the nucleus of her faithful followers, since no one better than her could understand their desires and fears, and give them the protection sought. Silver was linked to the Moon, and in their temples there were objects of that metal. Killa is also an exotic feminine name, but is often used more accompanied by other words such as Killasisa (Moonflower) or Killari (Moonlight).
